Community Profile: Meet Abukar Abdirahim

My name is Abukar Abdirahim. After a violent civil war tore Somalia apart, my family migrated to nearby refugee camps in Kenya before finally settling down in America. I was very young at the time but I remember my family staying at different people's houses before we were able to find our own.

My culture:

The Somali culture is vibrant and values family over everything (like many other cultures I hope). Somali women love creating their own dresses and scarves with brightly colored cloth, especially for weddings.

My Motivations:

Being a refugee motivated me to work harder in school because I felt like I was at a disadvantage. I am proud of myself for making it as far as I have. I am currently a senior at SDSU studying electrical engineering while also employed at a fine dining restaurant (hence the suit!).
